SPONSORSHIP & FUNDRAISING
The HONFL is an all-volunteer, not for profit organization sponsored by the Optimist Club of Herndon, VA. Our youth referees are our only paid employees. We aim to provide a great flag football experience to all children in Herndon and the surrounding communities through our HONFL Scholarship Program and the need is always great. Our sponsorship and fundraising activities help to raise the funding necessary to allow all children in our community to play regardless of financial circumstances. We believe strongly in this program which is why we accept all families that are receiving assistance from the state or local government. Since 2010, over 300 children have been given full scholarships to play in the HONFL.
Each team is responsible to raise $100 in sponsorship funds. We encourage you to find a business to sponsor your team, but all donations are welcome.
Our Cookie Dough Fundraiser will start on March 11 (First Day of the Combine) and ends on March 31 (Opening Day).
REGISTRATION CLOSES 3/11/2019
There is still time to register for the 2019 spring season of Herndon Optimist NFL Flag Football. We need the following:
- Referees - This is a paid position. Must be 14 or older as of 3/1/2019.
- Head Coaches - This is your opportunity to prove you are not just a Monday Morning QB. Register today to coach with the HONFL. Training and resources are provided to all volunteer coaches. We value your time and effort because without volunteers, our kids don't have the opportunity to play a game they love.
The combine runs from March 11-14. Please look at the schedule below to determine your player(s) day and time. Each registered player is required to participate in the combine, so they can be graded and drafted. Registration on the day of the combine is also possible.
The player combine is is held in Gym 1 and 2 at the Herndon Middle School.
Coaches: The combine is your opportunity to evaluate players before the draft. If you plan on coaching this year, please make it a priority to register as a volunteer at honfl.com and attend the combine. We need volunteers to help out, so if you are not evaluating players for your desired division, and are able to help out, please let us know your availability.
Parents: We are in need of volunteers to run stopwatches and record times. If you would like to help out, please let us know your availability. No football or coaching knowledge required!
Players should wear shorts, shirts and athletic shoes (no cleats) and bring a bottle of water.

Players are evaluated at the combine and graded A through C. The coaches use the grades to draft fair teams. Grades are not made public and are for league use only. The draft will be held on March 17 and is for coaches and league officials only. Coaches are required to attend. An email with details about time and place will be sent to the registered coaches. Your coach will send you an email letting you know you were drafted to his team and information about practices by Monday, March 18.
Coaches can pick their practice days and time, as well as their NFL Team name (one NFL Team per division). If we can not find a head coach for your child’s team, then the team will be drafted by the league, and won’t be able to practice until a head coach is found. We strongly encourage you to volunteer to coach a team.
Practices can start as soon as March 18, if your team has a head coach. Practices are held twice a week at the grass field behind Hutchison Elementary School. Coaches pick days and times of practice. Your child’s coach will send an email with this information after the draft on the 17th of March.
Opening Day is Sunday, March 31. All games in the 2019 spring season will be on Sundays starting at 1pm. All games are held at Hailey Smith Park. The game schedule will be generated after the draft on 3/17.
There will be 7 regular games, 1 playoff weekend and 1 Championship weekend in the 2019 spring season. There will be no practices or games during spring break (April 15-21) and Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-27). The playoffs are on June 2nd and the Championship Games are a week later on June 9. There will be no more practices or games after June 9.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
We follow the Fairfax County Parks Authority’s Schedule. Games and practices are cancelled if the fields are closed due to inclement weather. Please check your email or the website before heading to the fields. Unfortunately there is no room in the schedule for make up games.
